Vicks has added humidifiers to its arsenal of cold and flu fighters. The 12-inch-square model stands 8 inches tall and holds 1.5 gallons of water (enough for 18 to 24 hours). Remove the lid to add water; replace it and flip the switch on the 5-foot cord to start humidifying. The unit makes a pleasant purring sound as water is spun into cool mist, which is not as fine as that produced by models using wicks and creates some wetness on the floor in front of the unit. The manufacturer recommends periodically changing the filter and cleaning weekly with vinegar and bleach. It's important to keep humidifiers clean, lest you encourage the production of mold and end up reducing indoor air quality instead of improving it. Some nooks on the lid were too tight to easily wipe down. Comes with a two-year warranty.
